Throughout the trip, Sharkies Sport Chews became my best friend for a light snack and good energy boost. These delicious Vegan gummies are made form real fruit juice loaded with natural whole grains, electrolytes and minerals that keep us vegans going!! Yumm yumm! Gotta try ‘em!
We ended our dive a little early compared to yesterday so our appetite wasn't large and famished but by the time we were finished up we were still ready to eat. As we searched the streets for a nice place to grab a quick bite to eat, we came across a small restaurant that became our main attraction and a must need stop for future trips.
Chilling behind a few street side trees and some umbrellas sat a small little restaurant called California Roll. Now Tim and I are complete sushi fans, so anytime we see the word “sushi” we make it a must to stop by and see what new discoveries and experiences we might find. As we walked into the little café we found that the atmosphere and setting of the restaurant was way more sophisticated and way more classy than what we had expected. Behind the tainted glass door sat a small room filled with Asian inspired décor; decorated dividers, a glass dessert case filled with bottle wines, sake and other goodies; tables set up with beautiful linens, plate runners, chopsticks and small decorated dishes for condiments; a colorful piece of fabric hanging down separating the dining area from the back; and a group of workers both kind and proper. To be honest Tim and I felt a little out of place with our disheveled hair and skimpy wet clothes, so we decided a seat outside would be best; a wooden bench under an umbrella to be exact.
Looking over the menu we discovered a whole new way to enjoy sushi. The menu had everything from your traditional California rolls with a twist to the Volcanic Tuna Roll with Rolled Tilapia and Cucumber, topped with spicy tuna, and glazed with hoisin BBQ and flaming Siracha sauce to Nigiri (raw fish). The menu was endless. They even had a Vegetarian menu which made my selection only 10 times harder (Sometimes I really enjoy being vegan because instead of going over the menu debating what I want, I easily know there’s only one to two things I can eat which equals less stress for me!)
Our waitress arrived, sweet and sophisticated, first offering an array of drinks from sake, to tea, to wine or beer to choose from. Tim and I decided to order a Sake, a traditional Japanese rice wine which we have been waiting for the opportunity to try and with our hard work, something we truly deserved! Our waitress suggested a shot of plum wine to mix with the Sake so we took her up on her suggesting and ordered a shot as well. We poured the chilled Sake into our wine glasses and of course, took a taste of that alone first. The first thing we noticed was the unique flavor this alcohol gave. You could automatically taste the starchy, savory flavors of the rice grains that this alcohol/beer/wine was distilled from along with a “watery” like feeling as well. The texture was very smooth with no bite or burn that many alcohol gives. Instead it went down extra smooth giving nothing but complete warmth the whole way through. Next we took a tiny sip of the plum wine which was very very strong and distinct in plum flavor. It was super sweet, super fruity with a small tanginess and bite. We mixed the two together into our wine glasses and created a unique drink that was out of this world. Both complimented each other very well when combined leaving a light and fruity wine in our hands with a smooth taste that was unbeatable. We both had no problem enjoying this wonderful concoction something we would definitely have again but of course also something we would have to drink with caution and in moderation considering the alcohol contecnt of a small bottle was a whopping 14%. Talk about woo woo!!
Before we knew it our sushi was making its way out to our table. It was beautifully arranged, mine on the left and his on the right with a beautiful rose created from wasabi and pickled ginger. I made Tim wait as I grabbed the cam and took a pic. OH MAN WAS IT GOOD! The sushi was so fresh and the flavors were so well mended together. With every bite you could tatse every ingredient from the toasty coconut to the fresh, crisp green onion..and the curry dip..sweet and spicy. YUMMO! It was so flavorful and good that Tim and didn’t even need the extra condiments. It was that good to eat alone. Our meal was complete within 5 minutes with no breath and no speaking in between..just chewing, inhaling and moaning in pure pleasure of the tastes that were filling our mouths. As we were finishing up we were moaning and complaining because we wanted so much more since it was just that good; but unfortunately our pockets could not afford another serving (it was a ad bit pricey..but hey it, as you can see definitely worth it!). Instead we asked for our check and went on our merry way swearing to stop by once more before we left.
For the rest of the evening we enjoyed exploring the beautiful city of Morehead and Atlantic Beach while visiting with long-missed friends. It was just so nice and so enjoyable to be somewhere so different……a possible livable area? Maybe.
Nine O’Clock rolled around and once again our tummies were screaming FEED ME SEYMOUR! So we stopped by a little restaurant that seemed to make a lot of talk and enjoyed a nice veggie Panini and homemade fries and chips. Along with that I also has a draft of a popular New Belgium Amber Ale brew, Flat Tire, which was light and crisp. It reminded me of a Blue Moon but a little darker and a little sweeter. It was definitely a good choice that paired perfectly with my salty fries/chips. Soon after the alcohol and heavy food begin to take a toll on our bodies as they begin to drag with every step. We took one more stroll on the cool night beach and then called it a day as we headed once again, to the hotel to crash heavily for another good nights rest. Day 2...FINITO!
